Solid Waste

The County’s Solid Waste Program entails one transfer station and 12 outlying canister sites located throughout the county for residential garbage and recycling collection. The Environmental Services Department administers solid waste management through a variety of contracts for waste disposal, recycling, and operations of the demolition landfill and transfer station. In addition the County operates a Household Hazardous Waste Facility in cooperation with the Western Lake Superior Sanitation District located at the transfer station facility in Cohasset.

At the outlying canister sites the county generates approximately 1,600 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) and 2700 tons at the Cohasset transfer station. In addition, Waste Management processes approximately 17,500 tons of MSW at the Cohasset Transfer Station.
